From the Yankees-Indians game on June 26, 2012, our 3rd Base Umpire comes hustling up the line to see what happens and then…calls the Batter Out!
Some questions:
1. Do you see the baseball in Wise’s glove when he stands up?
2. Do you have voluntary release?
3. For those guys who work at levels where voluntary release isn’t a point of emphasis (like it is in NCAA), could you somehow justify calling on out here?
4. Would you have ejected the player that got “hosed” as quickly as U3 did?
Discuss…

With the benefit of replay and camera angles, I didn’t have firm and secure possession…if that isn’t met, I can’t have voluntary release.
DiMuro kicked the heck out of this play and we all know it. As for Harahan(sp?) getting run, he came out and started arguing over what he saw on video which is a big no-no… no matter how correct he was.
The biggest item in this video that upsets me and would have been the correct thing to do for U3 is to wait to see the ball from the outfielder and in essence his timing was to fast for that call. If he would have done that none of this would have happened and I have seen countless games were an umpire does not make a call until he sees that ball in the glove or being pulled out.
A simple “let me see the ball” would have gone a long way
